Red Salvia
Salvia coccinea

This is also known as tropical sage. Although it is listed as an annual, it will live for at least five years if watered during prolonged drought, fertilized ocassionally and cut back when full of dead heads.

Infrequently found along the coast and within inland hammocks. There is some debate as to whether it is native; I believe that it is.

Seedlings come up easily around the plant, especially the pink form. Make sure they stay where you want them or they will crowd out other plants.

Butterflies visit the flowers and birds eat the seeds and insects attracted to them. Buntings eat the young, soft seeds and hummingbirds visit the flowers, even when planted in a pot near the house.

Tolerant of full sun to moderate shade, yet will look poor if kept in full sun during a long period of drought.

Red, pink and white forms are naturally occuring. We provide just red or a mix of all three.

This plant can be mixed with many types of clumping wildflowers like gaillardia, porterweed, grasses, horsemint, yellowtop, firebush, coontie, beach creeper and dune sunflower. It needs a bit of space so plant at least two feet from its neighbor.
